Books for the Young

Emir’s Education in the Proper Use of Magical Powers, by Jane Roberts
A charming book truly for all ages with a powerful message. A prince journeys through the world before there was a name for things, eventually reaching the land of the Gods. It acknowledges the creative power of every individual and also explores the responsibility that entails and the necessity of cooperation and respect.  If you only select one book from this list, this should be it. by L.E.M., who has adored it for all her 20 years

All I see is part of Me, by Chara M. Curtis
"Your body is just a little part of the light that shines within your heart." "I used to think that I was small...a little body, that was all." Charming poetry and colorful illustrations grace this book that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Fun Is a Feeling, Chara M. Curtis (1998)
A child discovers that the joy of life comes from within and that attitude is all-important. I’ve not read it personally, but it comes highly recommended and is by the same author as the wonderful “All I See Is Part of Me”

Mountains, Meadows and Moonbeams, by Mary Summer Rain (1978)
It is good material for provoking discussions and it provides vocabulary difficult to find in children’s literature. However no one will agree with everything presented within, so parents will want to read it with their kids, choosing the vignettes they like.
Divided into four parts: The Spiritual Basics of the Universal Truths, Spiritual Lessons from Animals, Spiritual Messages from Verse, and Mother Nature’s Babies. Line drawings and very short stories explain different types of beings and varieties of experiences. L.E.M.

The Crystal Goddess, Shahastra Shambala Press
The Magical Rainbow Man, along with three children, help to rescue the Crystal Goddess from a dark cloud of negative thoughts. They remember that no struggling is necessary, only pure thoughts of love. The message is a little heavy-handed and unrelentingly positive, but worth it nonetheless, especially for young children. L.E.M.

The Magical Rainbow Man and the Journey of Love. By Shahastra.
A 'Rainbow Being' comes down from the rainbows, taking three children on a journey through each spectrum. They meet seven different  beings, each who embody one of the spectrums of the rainbow. Nancy

Star Babies, by Mary Summer Rain
Explains to children that we are all intelligent beings sharing one universe, one neighborhood, and that there is no such thing as an alien (e.g. we are all ONE).

Grandfather Twilight, by Barbara Helen Berger
A graceful book that fosters presence of mind. The perfect bedtime story. L.E.M.

When the Sun Rose, by Barbara Helen Berger
A gorgeous book that speaks of true friendship and love that never leaves. “Grandfather Twilight” by the same author is also recommended.

The Summer Solstice, et al, by Ellen Jackson
An engaging mix of ancient ceremonies and myths, recipes, scientific facts and crafts. Helps us all reconnect with the cycles of nature. The series also contains the Winter Solstice and the Spring and Autumn Equinox.

The Little Soul and the Sun, A Children’s Parable Adapted from Conversations With God, by Neale Donald Walsch. Infused with good messages, though can be a bit confusing and overly ‘cute’.

The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein
A simple yet profound story of the loving, yet unbalanced, relationship between a boy and a tree. The tree gives to the boy, though the boy rarely gives back, until all that’s left is the stump. A heartbreaking (and heart-mending) story that is sure to foster empathy and compassion. L.E.M.

Crystal Kids P.L.A.Y Book: Metaphysics, Meditations, Healing Arts & Crystal Fun for Beginners of All Ages, by Marcia Singer
This delightful children's coloring book is a wonderful instructional tool that gently guides the imagination through suggestion and realization... Meditation and color breathing are some of the topics covered in loving detail. Encourages the acknowledgment and opening of subtler senses - a delightful presentation. Marcel Vogel's Psychic Research Newsletter

The House Above the Trees, by Ethel Cook Eliot
A poor, lonely, and motherless girl is shunned by her peers. All her loneliness slips away the day she catches a glimpse of another world, a world of Wind Creatures, Forest People and Fairies. It is her clear and pure vision that enables her to see them in the first place, but the courage and confidence she gains from stepping into their world and living amongst them holds many powerful truths for readers young and old! review by Chinaberry.com, a wonderful resource for children’s books.

Books for Older Kids and the Young at Heart

Welcome to the Ark, by Stephanie Tolan
Highly gifted kids (both spiritually and academically) discover each other in a mental institution, all wrongly diagnosed. Sympathetic psychiatrists form a group therapy home. The children are all deeply disturbed by the violence occurring today, and band together to “tame” that violence through the power of the heart and mind. Such an absorbing novel, my mother and I took turns reading it to each other. L.E.M.

The Forgotten Door, by Alexander Key
An absorbing story for all ages where a young boy falls from his peace-loving planet to our reality, and is struck by the violence here (emotional and physical). It acknowledges empathy, animal communication, telepathy and empowers young people to make a difference. Nancy

Enlightening Tales, as told by Sri Swami Satchidananda The stories are derived from India's cultural heritage, but each has a lesson which holds true universally whatever your religious or cultural background.

The Seventh Son, Book one of Alvin, the Maker Series, by Orson Scott Card.
The Seventh Son is the story of a 7th son of a 7th son. What I like about the story is that everyone has a "knack" for something, making them special.  In the story, there's even a woman who has a "knack" for keeping a neat home.  So it helps you to acknowledge even the mundane things as special in their own way.  The boy, Alvin, has not yet discovered his knack and the story is about him going through the journey of youth to discover it.  There are quests, psychic and multi-dimensional experiences and otherworldly things.  A favorite in this house. Reviewed by Gail F. Recommended by many!

His Dark Materials Trilogy, by Philip Pullman
This author should be numbered among the likes of C.S. Lewis, his work is that awe-some. A strong young female lead uses intuitive power to read the complex golden compass, a guide for her throughout her involved adventures with a cast of well developed characters. The series portrays telepathy, empathy, premonition, movement between alternate worlds, and all sorts of multidimensionality. Highly recommended. 12 yo + (will build your vocab too!) L.E.M.

Emmanuel’s Book III: What is an Angel doing Here? by Pat Rodegast and Judith Stanton.

The positive, inspiring words of Emmanuel, as channeled by Rodegast. Question and answer format make it easy to read (for teens and up). From questions about angels to more worldly things like “How can we work with physical pain?”, it’s sure to spark discussions. A good opportunity to tune into your own inner wisdom. L.E.M.

What the Animals Tell Me, by Sonya Fitzpatrick
The author tells of her extensive experience working and communicating with pets and helps us all develop our innate telepathic skills to communicate with animals. I had great enjoyment reading this book. Children may enjoy having excerpts read to them. L.E.M.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull, by Richard Bach (1970) A spirituality classic, this is an inspiring parable about living your truth even in the face of the disapproval of your ‘flock’ (If, like Jonathan, you happen to be a seagull). Especially great for teens.

Ingathering: The Complete People Stories of Zenna Henderson (1952-72) the People are members of a race of humanlike, psychically gifted extraterrestrials who become stranded on Earth after their starship crashes during a space migration they refer to as the Crossing. One human's encounter with the People make up a series of vignettes. Emotionally powerful, sends a message of compassion to those who are different, living in an intolerant world.

The Lost Years of Merlin Epic Series, by T.A. Barron
In this series of Merlin’s coming of age, Barron reaches deep into the recesses of our mythic imagination to reveal a Merlin we do not know from other stories. Taken as a whole, these books are like a course in living. The author speaks right to the core of our being, speaking of the individual’s struggle to be whole in an imperfect world. Review by Chinaberry.com

Videos & DVD’s

Spirited Away, Hayao Miyazaki (PG)

A Japanese Animation film for children that celebrates the triumph of love.  It shows children that what at first appears scary, is not always bad, and refreshingly departs from the traditional Disney black and white model of good vs evil. Wonderfully imaginative - adults will love it too! L.E.M.

The Whale Rider, Niki Caro (PG-13)
A film of young girl-power breaking traditional gender stereotypes in the Maori culture in New Zealand, this touching story highlights a deep inner communication with whale beings. Emotionally powerful.

Fantasia, Leopold Stokowski (G)
A superbly animated film done exclusively to well-known classical music.  Though it doesn’t speak specifically to intuition or spirituality, it leaves the door open for many wonderful discussions. The sensory experience is a phenomenal blend of many senses. Nancy

The Fairy Faith, John Walker (Not Rated)
Highly recommended documentary film about faeries. The director
journeys through Ireland, England, Scotland and Cape Breton to gather accounts. Available through Canadian National Film Board: http://www.nfb.ca

The Never Ending Story, Wolfgang Petersen (PG)
A charming story of a boy who becomes one with an tale of a magical land that is falling apart because of disbelief. It demonstrates the power of one individual to affect reality. It may be scary for some. Nancy

The Secret of Roan Inish, John Sayles (PG)
A young girl goes to live with her grandparents in rural  Ireland and has mystical, spiritual experiences with seals and reconnects with her family heritage. An enchanting treasure! One of the very best movies I've ever seen.  Jenna, Pam et al PsyKids Group

My Neighbor Totoro, Hayao Miyazaki (G)
The story of two young sisters who meet "Totoro,” the Spirit of the Forest. Best of all, the Totoros can only be seen by children! My children have always loved this Japanese animated film. Very magical for all ages - I have watched it a dozen times myself!  Recommended by Cathy and others of the PsyKids E-Group

Kristen’s Fairy House, Ages 4-8
A girl visits a little island off the coast of Maine with her aunt and builds small fairy homes. The fairies show themselves as a way of thanking her for treating the woods with care and respect. Children are encouraged to cherish and respect wildlife and their habitats and to create their own fairy houses! Very calming. Adapted from review by Chinaberry.com
